(UPDATE: the 3rd goal scored was Addie Grace)
In less than perfect soccer conditions, Ponca City was able to split a pair games with Enid, as the Lady Cats won 4-0 and the Wildcats fell 2-0.
It was cold and somewhat rainy at Sullins stadium, but the Lady Cats started attacking early against Enid. The Lady Cats had several good looks and an early shot that hit the cross bar of the goal in the 1st half. Finally, right before the end of the half, Taylor Wetzel scored her team leading 5th goal of the season on a tough angle, basically using the goal keeper to bounce one in, giving Ponca City a 1-0 lead at half. Then in the 2nd half, the team came out firing, scoring three goals. It started with a Emily Allensworth break away goal, then with 9:19 to go, Kenlie Adkins received a beautiful centering pass from Kierstin Crowder and was able to knock it in for her 1st goal of the season. The final goal was scored off a corner kick from Nichole Beyer and Addie Grace was on the receiving end, putting the ball into the back of the net. With the win, the Lady Cats were awarded the Cherokee Strip Cup trophy on the field.
The men’s soccer team went up against a talented Enid Plainsmen squad that used an aggressive defense to hold the Wildcats offense in check. Ponca City had a few opportunites early on including a pass right in front of the goal box just out of the reach of Jacob Mabry. Ponca City was only able to get a few shots on goal in the first half as the back four for Enid cleared many attacking efforts. Enid on the other hand was able to get onto the scoreboard early as Ivan Dellgadillo fired a shot from just outside the 18 square, just getting it by goalie Dereck Jernigan. Jernigan was solid the rest of the 1st half getting several saves and coming out of his goal box to stop some attacks by Enid. Ponca City also had several players leave the pitch with injuries throughout the night which didn’t help coach Steichen’s team. After stopping several shots another goal was scored by Enid in the 2nd half by Manay Perez. After falling down 2-0, Enid was able to just use their speed on the defensive side to frustrate the Ponca City forwards. Ponca City fought hard, but a couple final shot were stopped by goal keeper Angel Neri and Enid won 2-0.
